The colors of a new iPhone are a purchasing criterion for many. Whether you use your iPhone with or without a case hardly matters – the design is what matters. With the upcoming iPhone 17 series, Apple is expected to launch new color variants again. The first leaks are already circulating, although not everything has been confirmed yet.

As every year, the rumor mill is churning. The launch of the new iPhone generation is expected in the fall, likely in September. This year could be particularly interesting, as there are hints of new colors, new materials, and even a new model in the product line: the iPhone 17 Air. The question of which colors Apple is planning for the individual models can only be partially answered at this point – but there are reliable leaks that make some options quite concrete.

iPhone 17: New colors for the standard model

Two new colors are currently being discussed for the base iPhone 17: purple and green. This comes from a leak by well-known Apple leaker Majin Bu. He reports that Apple is testing both variants internally, but that only one will likely end up in the final lineup. According to his assessment, purple currently appears to be the favorite. Whether this color will remain is not yet certain.

iPhone 17 Air: The new model without confirmed colors

The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to replace the current Plus model. It's expected to be particularly thin and light, with a completely redesigned design and materials. However, it's not yet known which colors Apple plans to offer this new device. It's quite possible that Apple will develop its own, streamlined color palette for the Air—perhaps pared-down and elegant, matching the new look. However, there are no concrete indications yet.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: Material change brings new options

The Pro models could undergo major changes this year. Apple is said to be replacing the titanium frame of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with aluminum. The design of the back is also expected to be revised—it will be made partly of aluminum and partly of glass. The new material opens up new color possibilities. While the iPhone 16 Pro models were still available in muted tones like Natural Titanium, Black Titanium, White Titanium, and Desert Titanium, many now point to a new direction.

Sky Blue: New color for the iPhone 17 Pro

According to Majin Bu, Apple will release the iPhone 17 Pro in a new color called Sky Blue. This color is also used on the MacBook Air with the M4 chip, which Apple introduced in March. The color is a bright, slightly metallic blue that exhibits a slight gradient depending on the light. Bu describes Sky Blue as even more impressive than the previous Sierra Blue of the iPhone 13 Pro. The color is intended to appear brighter and more sophisticated. Apple itself describes the finish on the MacBook as "a metallic light blue with a dynamic gradient." If this color also makes its way to the iPhone, it would be a clear break from the previous, more subdued Pro colors. Majin Bu was already correct with his prediction of Desert Titanium for the iPhone 16 Pro models – seven months before the official launch. This lends a certain weight to his current statements, even though it is still only an unconfirmed leak.

iPhone 16 Review: What Apple Has Recently Offered

By comparison, Apple is opting for richer colors with greater color depth on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus than on the iPhone 15. The devices are available in ultramarine, teal, pink, white, and black. The yellow from the iPhone 15 lineup disappeared, replaced by ultramarine as a darker, more striking shade. Pink and ultramarine, in particular, appear significantly more vibrant compared to the more muted tones of the iPhone 15. Whether Apple will continue this style for the iPhone 17 or take a new direction remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the colors of the Pro models have always been more subdued than those of the standard models – and that could now change with the switch to aluminum.

Colors in focus: What's emerging on the iPhone 17

The official launch of the iPhone 17 series in the fall is still a while away. But there are already some concrete hints about the possible colors—most notably Sky Blue for the iPhone 17 Pro and Purple for the standard model. The color selection for the new iPhone 17 Air remains a question mark. If Apple does indeed break new ground with the materials for the Pro models, the colors could also change noticeably.
