In June, Apple raised prices for Macs, iPads, and Vision Pro – the iPhone remained unaffected. A tip from China now suggests that this grace period could end on Monday, weeks before the fall keynote.

That iPhone prices will rise in September has been considered a foregone conclusion for months: Storage costs are driving up prices, and the iPhone 18 Pro provides the usual impetus for a price adjustment. A price increase in the middle of August, on models that have already been on the market, would be surprising. That's precisely what's being discussed now. Nothing is confirmed – which makes it all the more useful to look at current prices and how reliable this information is. For choosing a model, comparing the iPhone 17, Air, and 17e can be helpful.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • A leaker on Weibo writes that there are rumors circulating about a price increase for the iPhone 17 on August 10th.
  • He does not name his own source – he is explicitly passing on what he has been told.
  • The price increase on June 25th affected Macs, iPads and Vision Pro; the iPhone remained unchanged.
  • It remains unclear whether all models would be affected or only some.
  • Anyone who was planning to buy anyway will have clarity about the current price by Sunday.

What the clue reveals – and what it doesn't

The account Fixed Focus Digital, which has been correct several times in the past, is posting on Weibo about rumors of a price increase for the iPhone 17 on August 10th. The wording is the crucial point: it's not reporting from its own knowledge, but rather relaying the fact that such rumors are circulating.

This is hearsay upon hearsay – the weakest form of leak. On its own, the report wouldn't amount to much. What makes it interesting is the calendar: a date for a price adjustment is unusually specific, and August 10th is a Monday, the usual day for quiet store changes.

The scope of the change also remains unclear. The announcement does not specify whether the adjustment would affect the entire lineup, only those models remaining in production beyond autumn, or only individual storage levels.

These prices are currently valid in Germany

For German-speaking regions, the current price is the most useful information. All figures are from the German Apple Store and include 19 percent VAT.

Model256 GB512 GB1 TB2 TB
iPhone 17e699 €949 €––
iPhone 17949 €1.199 €––
iPhone Air1.199 €1.449 €1.699 €–
iPhone 17 Pro1.299 €1.549 €1.799 €–
iPhone 17 Pro Max1.449 €1.699 €1.949 €2.449 €

The underlying structure is remarkably consistent: Each doubling of storage costs €250 across all models. Only the jump to 2 TB on the Pro Max, at €500, deviates from this pattern. The price differences between the model tiers are also €250 each – with one exception: the difference between the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro is only €100.

This regularity is the reason why a price increase would quickly become apparent. Where all the increments are at 250 euros, any deviation is immediately noticeable.

Why the iPhone was spared in June

On June 25, Apple raised the prices of Macs, iPads, and Vision Pro. The base iPad jumped from €379 to €499, an increase of approximately 32 percent. The iPhone was not included in the price hikes—nor were the Apple Watch or AirPods.

The obvious assumption was that Apple wanted to link the reorganization to the new generation in September – a higher price could then be justified by new hardware, rather than by an existing model. Should the adjustment come earlier, it would suggest that cost pressures no longer allow for this consideration.

The storage drives the calculation

The underlying reason is the same as in all price debates this summer. The memory crisis is dividing the market, and Apple's attempt to exert downward pressure on prices through a Chinese supplier has failed. Apple itself has announced higher memory costs for the current quarter.

This aligns with the fact that demand is already shifting upwards: Apple now holds 65 percent of the premium segment, and more expensive devices sell better than cheaper ones. A price increase would therefore hit a market that can currently tolerate price hikes.

How this will affect the next generation is summarized in the overview for the iPhone 18 Pro.

The time window extends until Sunday evening

No one except Apple knows whether anything will actually happen on Monday, and the available sources offer no prediction. The only certainty is that the prices mentioned above will remain valid until then.

In practical terms, this means that if you were already planning a purchase for the next few weeks, bringing it forward to this weekend won't cost you anything – at worst, the price would be the same on Monday. However, if you're waiting for the new generation anyway, this information won't change your bill, as the price list will be reorganized in September.

Between store changes and keynote

Should Apple actually bring forward prices, it wouldn't be a solo effort, but rather a continuation of the June round – only this time with the product group that was missing back then. And it would be an indication of just how tight their pricing has become.

If it doesn't happen, that doesn't change much about the expectations for September. The only difference then lies in the timing, not the direction. (Image: Apple)
