Many iPhone and iPad users use other browsers or email applications - but these cannot be set as the default app. But Apple seems to be thinking about changing this, and the HomePod is also to be taken into account.

The default browser in iOS is currently Safari. Users cannot change this - the same applies to the mail app. A similar situation can be observed in the HomePod area. If you use Spotify instead of Apple Music, you can only play the music via AirPlay. A custom setting is not yet possible. But that is set to change, as Bloomberg now reports. Apple seems to be considering allowing the selection of third-party applications in the default settings. This would allow users to set their favorite app as the default application. In the report is it [called:

The tech giant is debating whether to let users choose third-party web browsers and email programs as default options on Apple's mobile devices, replacing the company's Safari browser and mail application, according to people familiar with the matter.

An antitrust issue?

But where does this sudden change of thinking come from? Is this a reaction to an antitrust issue? Because that is exactly what some observers currently believe. Apple has already been accused of giving its own apps an unfair advantage - knowing full well that many users prefer third-party solutions in the browser and email sectors. Now some believe that Apple's current approach could trigger an investigation by lawmakers into possible antitrust violations. The Cupertino-based company also knows this.

HomePod could become more attractive

But Apple's considerations are not only related to the iPhone and iPad. According to Bloomberg, the HomePod is also being discussed. It states:

The Cupertino, California-based company is also considering loosening restrictions on third-party music apps, including its top streaming rival Spotify Technology SA, on HomePods.

According to this, the HomePod could also natively support Spotify and Co. in the future. A change that many Apple users with a Spotify subscription have long wanted. In addition, opening up the Siri speaker could significantly boost sales. However, it is not known whether the HomePod's integrated Bluetooth interface will also be made accessible. This is only activated during the setup process and is then deactivated because the speaker uses Apple's AirPlay protocol. A final decision is still pending - but the innovations could be introduced under iOS 14. (Photo by franky242 / Bigstockphoto)
