Apple plans to launch the new M5 chip in fall 2025. This will mark the next step in its in-house processor development. According to current information, two devices will be the first to be equipped with it: the MacBook Pro and the iPad Pro. This time, Apple is taking a different approach than last year with the M4, when the iPad was the first to be served before the Mac. Now, both flagship devices are expected to receive an update simultaneously.
Following the release of the M4 MacBook Air earlier this year, all of Apple's current M-series products have now been updated. But the M5 is already ready. It's expected this fall—and according to reports, it will initially affect the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. What's particularly striking is that Apple is no longer willing to accept a six-month delay between the iPad and MacBook this time around. This could mean that both devices will be released at almost the same time, which is unusual.
MacBook Pro gets M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple traditionally releases new MacBook Pro models in October or November, and this year looks set to be no different. Three versions are planned: a MacBook Pro with the base model of the M5, one with the M5 Pro, and one with the M5 Max. Technical details on the new chips are not yet known, but it's likely they'll be classic performance upgrades—without a major hardware redesign. According to current rumors, a major update with a new design, OLED display, and other innovations isn't expected until next year with the M6.
iPad Pro remains at the forefront
The iPad Pro was the first device to feature the M4 in 2024 and received a complete redesign at the time. No external changes are expected for the upcoming M5 model. Instead, the focus will be on an internal upgrade: better performance, more efficient power management, and new features related to iPadOS 26. Apple is expected to heavily emphasize the new operating system in its communications surrounding the new iPad Pro. A launch in October or November is likely, although some expect an unveiling as early as September alongside the iPhone.
A new studio display is possible
In addition to the two flagship products, Apple could also introduce a new Studio Display. This, too, is likely planned for the fall. Whether it actually arrives remains to be seen. If it does, it would make technical sense, as Apple may want to demonstrate the expanded external display capabilities of the M5 MacBook Pro. There are no concrete hints or official announcements yet.
Further M5 devices will arrive in 2026 at the earliest
As things stand, the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro will be the only devices equipped with the M5 in 2025. Additional Macs with the new chip aren't planned until early 2026 or later. So, Apple is focusing on its two most important high-end products for the M5 launch.
