The well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already spoken several times about Apple wanting to use MiniLED technology in the future. The first products could appear as early as this year. But the ongoing COVID-19 crisis is forcing Apple to postpone. According to the report, the latest review of the supply chain has resulted in a delay. This is said to apply to both Epistar and FitTech. According to the current information, the actual panel assembly will not start until the fourth quarter of 2020. Kuo concludes that we will not see the first MiniLED devices until the first quarter of 2021 at the earliest. Initially, he believed that the novel coronavirus would not affect the development progress in terms of MiniLED technology, but he has now corrected this statement.
Thinner and lighter product designs
A total of six new products are expected to feature this new screen technology. According to Kuo's analysis, Apple is planning the following products with MiniLEDpanels:
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro
- 10.2-inch iPad
- 7.9-inch iPad mini
- 27-inch iMac Pro
- 16-inch MacBook Pro
- 14.1-inch MacBook Pro
This new display technology is said to provide better brightness and significantly better contrast overall. Deeper blacks are also guaranteed. The burn-in problem of OLEDs is also completely solved. In addition, mini LEDs are more efficient and would enable thinner and lighter product designs. Kuo has already emphasized this several times.
