Apple plans next chip: Will the M6 arrive sooner than expected?

Apple is once again stirring up rumors about its own processors. Although the first products with the M5 chip only appeared around three months ago, a recent report suggests that the next step could already be approaching. The potential M6 chip would thus arrive sooner than many had previously expected.

Since switching to Apple Silicon, Apple has pursued a significantly faster chip strategy than before. The intervals between new generations have shortened and no longer always follow a clearly predictable pattern. Against this backdrop, recent statements from well-informed sources are gaining importance.

Mark Gurman expects an early M6 chip

The starting point for the speculation is Mark Gurman's latest "Power On" newsletter. In it, he gives an overview of what to expect in the Mac lineup in 2026. After mentioning new MacBook models, he adds a noteworthy hint about the M6 chip.

Gurman writes in Bloomberg that the M6 processor could potentially appear sooner than many expect. While he clarifies that the chip isn't guaranteed to be in the next laptops, he still mentions a market launch "in the near future" in certain configurations.

Short distance between M5 and possible M6

Apple introduced the M5 chip in three devices in October. At first glance, it seems premature to be talking about a successor already. However, Gurman points to a concrete example from the recent past: there were only five months between the M3 and the M4. A rapid generational change is therefore no longer a novelty.

The M4 as an unexpected change of direction

The M4 chip was a major surprise when it was unveiled. This was not only due to the short time gap between it and the previous generation, but also because of the product in which it was first used. For the first time, a new Apple chip debuted not in a Mac, but in the iPad Pro. Until then, every new chip generation had originated in a Mac model.

Against this backdrop, the idea that an M6 product could also appear relatively soon seems less far-fetched. Apple has already demonstrated that established processes are no longer set in stone.

Uncertainty about the first M6 device

Despite all the indications, it remains unclear which device might be the first to receive the M6 chip. Rumors suggest a completely redesigned MacBook Pro with an OLED display, which could potentially be released earlier than originally planned.

However, this is contradicted by the fact that the more powerful M5 versions of the MacBook Pro haven't even been released yet. Furthermore, Gurman himself notes that the comprehensively redesigned MacBook Pro isn't expected to hit the market until late 2026. This makes an early M6 debut in that specific product line rather unlikely.

Timeframe remains open

What Gurman specifically means by "in the near future" is currently unclear. What is certain is that Apple is apparently already working internally on the next generation of chips, and the M6 could be deployed sooner than traditional product cycles would suggest.

Apple is keeping all options open

Whether the M6 chip will actually be released in the coming months remains to be seen. However, Mark Gurman's statements provide credible indications that Apple could once again deliver a surprise. After the unexpectedly rapid transition from the M3 to the M4 and the early deployment of new chips outside the Mac line, an early M6 launch is at least not out of the question.
