Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch its first mixed reality headset, which is set to be unveiled next month. While there is already a lot of information about the device, including some speculation about its name and operating system, it was recently revealed that Apple has registered the wordmark "xrOS." This suggests that the new operating system for the headset will be called "xrOS."

Apple is known for its secrecy and often uses shell companies to register trademarks and patents for unreleased products. The registration of the wordmark "xrOS" by a shell company of Apple indicates that the company wants to protect the name and operating system of its new mixed reality headset. The choice of the name "xrOS" could indicate the integration of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in the platform.

xrOS – The operating system for the Apple Reality Pro

The word mark “xrOS” was officially registered in New Zealand registered and uses the San Francisco font, which is also used on Apple's other operating systems such as iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Bloomberg reports that "xrOS" will be the official name of the operating system for Apple's new mixed reality headset. This name stands for "Extended Reality" and clarifies that the headset will offer both AR and VR features. The Wall Street Journal has revealed more details about the Apple Reality Pro headset. The headset will offer an immersive experience with high-resolution displays and sensors that allow users to interact with the real world. However, due to the complexity of the device, it will be available in limited quantities and is not expected to be released until the holiday season. The Apple Reality Pro is expected to be priced at $3,000.

The introduction of xrOS and the Apple Reality Pro headset

Apple is also planning a series of developer sessions at WWDC 2023 that will focus on developing software for the new headset. This underscores Apple's commitment to providing developers with tools and resources to create innovative AR/VR applications for the xrOS operating system. The registration of the "xrOS" wordmark suggests that Apple will equip its new mixed reality headset with this operating system. The Apple Reality Pro headset promises an immersive AR/VR experience with high-resolution displays and innovative sensors. Although the headset will initially be available in limited quantities, Apple is expected to develop more AR/VR products based on xrOS in the future. By providing developer tools at WWDC, Apple is also demonstrating its commitment to giving developers the opportunity to create innovative applications for the xrOS operating system and realize the potential of augmented reality.
