WhatsApp: New privacy feature protects your content

WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature designed to give you more control over your chats. Specifically, it will restrict the export of entire chat histories and the automatic saving of media by other users. The feature is currently in beta for iOS and is being tested under the name "Enhanced Chat Privacy."

Data protection and privacy are among the most important issues for messaging services. WhatsApp is regularly criticized in this regard, especially when it comes to its handling of sensitive data. This new feature demonstrates that the company is trying to give users more control – especially in group chats, where a lot of content is shared and stored. Restricting access to content can be particularly useful for personal or professional conversations.

What the new WhatsApp feature can do

With enhanced chat privacy, you can prevent other chat members from exporting your messages. This option is currently available in the WhatsApp beta for iOS and can be activated with a simple switch. If you enable this setting for a group chat, all participants will be notified. This makes the use of the feature transparent and simultaneously demonstrates that you value additional privacy. This measure affects not only exporting but also other functions related to saving and sharing content.

Prevent export

The central feature is blocking exports. Users you're texting with can no longer export the entire chat history outside of WhatsApp. This applies to both individual and group chats. However, individual messages can still be manually forwarded or saved as screenshots (via WABetaInfo).

Meta-AI is deactivated

Additionally, WhatsApp automatically disables meta AI once you enable enhanced chat privacy. This AI is part of a new feature that allows users to interact with a chatbot in the app. Disabling it ensures that AI features do not process or analyze data from these protected chats.

Automatic saving of media is blocked

Another effect of the new feature is that media like photos or videos that you send will no longer automatically end up in other users' camera rolls – even if they have enabled the "Save All Media" option for your contact. However, it's unclear whether this also prevents the manual saving of individual media. There is currently no official information on this.

Further options for protection

Even if the entire export is blocked, some ways to share content from a chat remain open—for example, by forwarding individual messages or taking screenshots. If that's not enough for you, you can also activate the disappearing messages feature. This allows you to specify after what time period messages are automatically deleted. WhatsApp offers various time periods to choose from.

Availability of new features

Enhanced chat privacy is currently only available in the beta version for iOS. It's still unclear when the feature will be rolled out to all users. As with many WhatsApp test features, this depends on how stable and practical it proves to be in everyday use. Users of the public version will have to be patient or test the beta.

WhatsApp strengthens data protection, but not completely

WhatsApp is taking a step further toward data protection. The new feature gives you more control over what happens to your chats. This is especially important in groups or for sensitive conversations. Even if the feature doesn't yet close all gaps—such as screenshots or manual saving—it's a useful expansion of privacy settings.
