WhatsApp is testing a new quiz feature for channels

WhatsApp is gradually expanding its channel features. A recent beta version reveals a new way for channels to interact more effectively with their followers. At its core is a new quiz tool that tests knowledge rather than opinions, thus enabling a clearly defined form of interaction on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp channels have so far been designed primarily as a one-way street. Admins publish content, and followers read along. While polls already exist, these mainly serve to gauge opinions. With the planned quiz feature, WhatsApp is taking a different approach. Interaction is intended to become more targeted, playful, and simultaneously analyzable, without compromising data privacy.

New quiz tool in the WhatsApp beta

A new feature called "Channel Quiz" has appeared in the latest WhatsApp beta version for iOS. It was discovered by WABetaInfo. The beta version is being distributed via TestFlight.

The quiz tool is specifically designed for channels and is intended exclusively for channel admins. Its goal is to add an additional interactive layer to channels and increase follower engagement.

This is how quizzes work in WhatsApp channels

When creating a quiz, administrators can enter a specific question and add multiple answer choices. Each answer can optionally be accompanied by an image. This allows for a wide variety of quiz formats, from visual tasks to classic knowledge-based questions.

A key difference from previous surveys is mandatory. Before publication, each answer must be marked as correct. This clarifies that the survey is about knowledge and not personal opinions. This clear labeling unambiguously defines the purpose of the interaction and prevents misunderstandings among participants.

As soon as a follower selects an answer, they immediately see if it was correct. If the answer is correct, WhatsApp displays a confetti animation. This visual effect enhances the playful nature of the interaction and provides immediate feedback.

Evaluation and data protection for participants

For channel admins, the quiz tool provides a detailed overview of which answers were selected. It shows how many participants chose each option. However, WhatsApp implements restrictions to protect user privacy.

If participants are not saved in the administrator's contacts, their participation remains visible, but personal information is only displayed to a limited extent. Depending on individual privacy settings, for example, only the profile picture may be visible, while details such as name or phone number remain hidden. This allows for analysis without disclosing sensitive data.

Indications of an imminent introduction

The quiz feature appeared in the WhatsApp beta for iOS just a few days after the same feature had already surfaced in the Android beta. This close timing suggests that WhatsApp is preparing the feature for both platforms simultaneously. A wider rollout to all users could therefore happen sooner rather than later, even though there is no official date yet.

Increased engagement in WhatsApp channels through interactive content

With its quiz-based interactions, WhatsApp significantly expands the potential uses of its channels. Instead of simply distributing information, active participation takes center stage. Knowledge, feedback, and gamified elements can thus be directly integrated into WhatsApp channels. At the same time, data privacy remains a central element of the implementation.
