Photos sent to contacts in WhatsApp could soon be of better quality, according to WhatsApp's latest iOS beta.

WABetaInfo according to WhatsApp is testing support for higher quality media upload in beta version 2.21.150.11 for iOS. WhatsApp beta testers can access a new tab called "Media Upload Quality" in the "WhatsApp Settings", under "Storage and Data". There are three options listed:

  • car (recommended)
  • Best quality
  • data-saving

With the "Best Quality" option, the media is larger and, according to WhatsApp, it can take longer to upload and send it. If you don't have a lot of data available, you can select the "Data Saver" option for lower resolution images. But be careful: the "Best Quality" option still compresses the image. WABetainfo explains:

WhatsApp: Multi-device compatibility is also being tested

Choosing the Best Quality option doesn't mean you'll send the photos at their original quality. However, the algorithm used to compress the photos is lighter and retains about 80% of the original quality. If the cropped image is larger than 2048x2048, it may be reduced in size. The quality values so far have varied widely.

At the weekend, WhatsApp integrated multi-device compatibility into the beta for the first time. However, the feature is not available to all beta testers. As soon as the function is available to all users, they will be able to use their WhatsApp account on four different devices, including a mobile phone. This means that users can use the account on a Mac, for example, without having to have their iPhone next to it. It is currently not known when the whole thing will be made available to all users. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
