The two audio features that Apple announced for the new watches in September have arrived for testing. The Apple Watch now records what has just been said and, if desired, summarizes entire conversations. For Germany and Austria, however, this remains just a text feature for now: Apple is excluding the EU from the initial launch.
Live Rewind and Siri Recap are part of Audio Intelligence on the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. Music recognition with Shazam already works on these watches, but these two conversational features were previously missing. According to a report from MacRumors, they are now included in the first beta of watchOS 27.3.
Apple has simultaneously updated its support document for Audio Intelligence in English. This document outlines the terms and conditions, one of which, also referenced on Apple's product page, directly affects German-speaking regions.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Live Rewind displays the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text after a double press of the Digital Crown.
- Siri Summary creates short summaries of conversations in the background and does not provide a transcript.
- Both features require an Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 and an iPhone 16 or newer; the iPhone 16e is not supported.
- Initially, they will only be available in English, and they will not be available in the EU at first. Switzerland is not a member of the EU.
- The launch is scheduled for later this year with watchOS 27.3, and daily usage limits will be added.
Two functions, two ways of working
Live Rewind only responds to a deliberate double press of the Digital Crown. The watch then displays a text snippet of what was said in the last 15 seconds and does not transcribe further. Siri Summary, on the other hand, runs in the background and later provides brief notes on the day's conversations.
| Live Rewind | Siri Summary | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Double press on the Digital Crown | Schedule by time or location, manually or in the control center |
| Result | Text excerpt of the last 15 seconds | Brief summary, not a transcript |
| Processing | On Apple Watch and iPhone, when backing up or querying via Private Cloud Compute | On Apple Watch and iPhone, then via Private Cloud Compute |
| Storage | It disappears approximately 30 seconds after the display dims | Automatic deletion can be set to occur after a maximum of seven days |
| Secure | In the Siri app, export to, for example, Notes or Journal | In the Siri app, export to, for example, Notes or Journal |
Both functions are activated in the Watch app on the iPhone. For Live Rewind, go to „Siri” and then „Live Rewind,” where the „Double Click Digital Crown” switch activates the function.
If someone is speaking casually nearby, that shouldn't be the focus. Siri Summary is designed to summarize the most audible conversation and pauses if media or a call is playing through headphones, or if Active Noise Cancellation is enabled on AirPods or Beats.
What Apple is doing to protect bystanders
According to Apple, no audio recordings are made. The sound is stored in a protected buffer within the S11 chip's Secure Exclave, which neither the system, apps, nor Apple can access. The features also do not attribute statements to specific speakers; names only appear if they are mentioned during the conversation itself.
If someone triggers Live Rewind, the watch plays an audible tone, even if muted and with headphones connected. This is accompanied by an animation across the entire display and a microphone icon.
The results are not without flaws. Apple itself states that summaries and text snippets may be incomplete or inaccurate, and that important details may be missing or misrepresented. Furthermore, daily usage limits apply to Live Rewind and Siri Summary because parts of them depend on server models. The document does not specify concrete limits.
Germany and Austria will initially be excluded
The crucial sentence is found in the footnotes of the English document dated November 3rd:
Siri Summary and Live Rewind will initially be available in English and will not be available in the EU at first.
This aligns with the requirement for Siri AI, which is missing on watchOS in the EU, just as it is on iPhone and iPad. The German version of the document still reflects the date of October 12th and does not contain this sentence.
Switzerland is not part of the EU and is therefore not subject to this exclusion. Both functions would be usable there in English, i.e., with English device and Siri language.
The two versions differ regarding the age limit. The German version specifies 13 years and requires parental approval for child accounts under 18, while the newer English version excludes all users under 18.
Hardware and schedule
In addition to the watch, a paired iPhone with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI is required. Supported models include the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17e, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo; the iPhone 16e is not supported. Older watches are not compatible because all four components of Audio Intelligence require the S11 chip.
Apple says the release of watchOS 27.3 will be „later this year,” but doesn't specify a date. The first beta of watchOS 27.3 was released at the same time as iOS 27.3. Users who update their watch to the beta version beforehand cannot revert to an older version.
A selling point that doesn't yet count in this country
If you're in Germany or Austria and considering buying a new Apple Watch, you shouldn't factor in Live Rewind and Siri Summary. Without EU approval, they're useless here, and there's no release date for that, just as there's no word on a German language version. The Apple Watch buying guide is still valid even without these two features.
I consider Live Rewind to be the more practical of the two for everyday use. The trigger is deliberate, the sound is audible to everyone, and the text disappears automatically.
Siri's Summary feature is the more sensitive one because it analyzes conversations with other people in the background and operates without an audible signal. Apple itself advises being considerate of those around you when conversations could be private or confidential.
Would you have your conversations summarized on your wrist as soon as that's possible, or are the 15 seconds of Live Rewind enough for you? Tell us in the comments where you draw the line.
