The repair program for MacBook devices with defective anti-reflective coating seems to have received an update from Apple.

According to a new report from MacRumors, Apple appears to be informing authorized service partners about a change to the replacement program for defective anti-reflective coatings on certain MacBook models. Devices with this defect can be repaired free of charge by Apple or an authorized service partner for up to four years from the date of purchase. This support has now officially been discontinued for MacBook models from 2013 and 2014 - according to the internal memo. Accordingly, the following models are now eligible for such a repair:

  • MacBook (12″ – Early 2015)
  • MacBook Pro (13″ – Early 2015)
  • MacBook Pro (15″ – Mid 2015)
  • MacBook (12″ – Early 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (13″ inch – 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (15″ – 2016)
  • MacBook (12″ – Early 2017)
  • MacBook Pro (13″ – 2017)
  • MacBook Pro (15″ – 2017)

As you can see, MacBook models from 2018 or 2019 are not included in the list. The repair program for defective anti-reflective coatings was launched by Apple in 2015 after numerous users were affected. The company never officially listed the problem on the corresponding repair program page but handled the whole thing largely discreetly via the normal support channel. It is also not known to date how many users are actually affected by this defect.

Reimbursement for repair costs possible

If you notice actual wear and tear on the surface of your display, you can arrange for repairs via the official Apple website or visit an authorized service partner. Did you know? Customers can report the costs incurred by such an out-of-warranty replacement to Apple. They will receive a refund upon presentation of proof. (Photo by Prathan / Bigstockphoto)
