Spotify has officially unveiled its new in-vehicle device, the "Car Thing." The smart player supports voice control (Hey Spotify) and features a rotary knob, touchscreen, and preset buttons for control.
Car Thing connects to a user's car via Bluetooth, AUX, or USB cable and allows them to play music and podcasts from Spotify Premium through their vehicle's speakers. It is powered by the car's 12-volt outlet and can be mounted on the dashboard, in a vent, or on the vehicle's CD player using the three included mounts. The device features a "Hey Spotify" hands-free function, similar to Apple's "Hey Siri." It also features a touchscreen and a tactile dial that allows users to navigate through music. Four preset buttons allow users to access their favorite artists, playlists, stations, and podcasts.
Car Thing requires Spotify Premium plan
Car Thing works Spotify according to almost independent of the smartphone. There is, however, a small catch. The new device does not have its own internet connection. This means that Car Thing still has to connect to the Spotify app on the smartphone to play music. In addition, the Spotify Premium plan is required, which costs around 9.99 euros per month. According to Spotify, Car Thing will retail for 79.99 dollars. According to the company, a limited number of premium subscribers in the USA will receive the device for free.
