Sony started rolling out AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support today. A corresponding update is currently being rolled out to select models.
Sony announced at the beginning of the year that selected Smart TV models would receive AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit support. Now the time has come. The new software update enables Apple users to use AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on their Sony Smart TV. The update is available on mid-range and upper-range models.
Supported models from 2018:
- XBR Z9F series
- XBR A9F series
Supported models from 2019:
- XBR Z9G series
- XBR A9G series
- XBR X950G series
- XBR X850G series (55/65/75/75/85 inches)
The update has so far been released in the US, Canada and Latin America. It is currently unknown when other markets will follow. Sony said the following in an earlier announcement:
A major software update is planned for your Android TV in December 2019. The software update will be rolled out gradually and may not be available for your TV immediately. If you have the "Automatically check for updates" feature enabled, you'll see a notification on your TV when the update is available.

New features and changes:
- Offers support for Apple AirPlay and Apple Homekit. With Apple AirPlay you can stream movies, music, games and photos directly from your iPhone, iPad or Mac computer to your TV.
- Integrated Dolby Atmos support via the TV's built-in speakers. In addition, compatible models will automatically switch to Dolby Audio in Sound mode so you can enjoy Dolby Atmos content.
- Pass-through mode has been added, allowing compressed audio to be output to a home theater or soundbar.
2018 models only:
- The Video, Album and Music applications are combined with the Media Player application. Videos, photos and music can now be viewed as a list in the Media Player app.
- Provides support for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) 100/120Hz format for USB video playback.
2019 models only:
- Small screen for the TV display on the program guide
- While you are in the program guide, a small screen will appear in the upper right corner to display the program you are currently watching.
- Behavior of the lighting LEDs when “Ok Google” is detected (except for models XBR X850G/X855G/X857G).
- The lighting LED flashes yellow when you say “Ok Google” when your TV is on or in standby mode.
