OpenAI is expanding its scope. After years of focusing on software and AI models, the company is now moving into hardware. The recently completed acquisition of io Products, an AI hardware startup led by former Apple designer Jony Ive, sends a clear signal: OpenAI wants to penetrate people's everyday lives with its own device.
The AI company OpenAI has officially confirmed that it has acquired io Products. The startup was founded by Jony Ive, Apple's longtime chief designer, along with several other former Apple designers. The purchase price is approximately $6.5 billion. With the completion of the acquisition, the io team is now fully integrated into OpenAI. Jony Ive and his design firm LoveFrom will remain independent but will assume design and creative responsibilities at OpenAI. According to initial information, it will be neither an in-ear device nor a wearable. Instead, a small product is planned that sits in a pocket or on a desk – alongside a MacBook or iPhone, but without copying their shape or usage concept. The device will have no display and instead interact with its environment and the user in a context-sensitive manner. Voice- or gesture-based control, combined with AI-driven situational analysis, is conceivable. Rumors have it that it could, for example, react to speech, behavior, or the environment and proactively provide information – without the need to constantly look at a screen.
Merger without loss of control for LoveFrom
Even though io Products is now part of OpenAI, LoveFrom will remain an independent company. Ive and his team will continue to work closely with OpenAI, focusing on design, user experience, and the visual implementation of the products. OpenAI, in turn, will contribute its AI technologies and machine learning. Several designers who co-founded io will move directly to OpenAI. This means that not only Jony Ive's vision will flow into the new hardware, but also the experience of an entire team that has already worked on groundbreaking products at Apple.
