When Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra in September, the company also showed how it could be used to record deep dives thanks to advanced new sensors. During the keynote, the company also promoted a third-party app called Oceanic+ that displays detailed dive data. Now, that app is finally available to Apple Watch Ultra users.
Apple Watch Ultra customers can already use Apple's Depth app to track depth and measure water temperature, but Oceanic+ extends deep dive tracking capabilities even further. The app uses the Bühlmann decompression algorithm and offers dive planning, easy-to-read dive metrics, visual and haptic alerts, a no-decompression limit, ascent rate, and safety stop guidance. Apple describes the app and the partnership with Huish Outdoors, the developers of Oceanic+, as follows:
Today, the Oceanic+ app comes to Apple Watch Ultra, turning Apple's most rugged watch into a full-featured, easy-to-use dive computer. Developed by Huish Outdoors in partnership with Apple, Oceanic+ allows recreational divers to use the watch they wear every day to reach previously unattainable depths—up to 40 meters, to be exact—with Apple Watch Ultra's all-new depth gauge and water temperature sensors.
According to Apple, the new Apple Watch Ultra, when combined with Oceanic+, is able to provide advanced dive data in a more intuitive way, allowing divers to focus on their surroundings without having to do mental calculations or deal with super-complex dive computers.
Oceanic+ app now available in the App Store
It is worth noting that the Apple Watch Ultra is certified to WR100 and EN 13319, an internationally recognized standard for diving accessories, including depth gauges. The company also points out that the titanium structure combined with the sapphire glass-covered display of the Apple Watch Ultra makes it the perfect companion for deep diving. The Oceanic+ app for the Apple Watch Ultra is available for download from the App Store starting today. Download It requires an Apple Watch Ultra with watchOS 9.1 in conjunction with an iPhone 8 or later and an iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later with iOS 16.1. The basic version is free and includes many common diving functions, such as depth and time, as well as recording the last dives.
