Apple officially released macOS Big Sur worldwide on November 12th publishedNow there are increasing reports that the new Mac operating system is knocking out older MacBook models.
Many new features have been integrated into macOS Big Sur, including in the area of design. According to Apple, the update will support the following models:
- 2017 and newer iMac Pro
- 2015 and newer MacBook
- 2014 and newer Mac mini
- 2014 and newer iMac
- 2013 and newer Mac Pro
- 2013 and newer MacBook Pro
- 2013 and newer MacBook Air

But obviously not all users are happy with the new version. In various forums, including Reddit, MacRumors and Apple's own support forum Reports are being documented that macOS Big Sur is knocking out older MacBook Pro 13″ models (Late 2013 & Mid 2014). Given the number of complaints, the problem seems to be widespread. For example, while updating to macOS Big Sur, devices are reported to get stuck on a black screen. Reset shortcuts, including NVRAM, SMC, Safe Mode, and Internet Recovery, are all inaccessible after attempting to install the update. Thus, there is no way to bypass or exit the static black screen.
macOS Big Sur: Apple's engineering team has already been informed
The problem has so far only been observed in connection with MacBook Pro 13" models from late 2013 and mid-2014. Although the number of complaints is huge, it remains unclear whether every owner of one of these devices is affected. Interestingly, both device versions should support the update according to Apple. A look at the list of compatible Macs also reveals that the affected MacBooks are the oldest models supported by macOS Big Sur. A Reddit user reports that Apple Support has suggested a repair request. Another user confirmed that the problem has been forwarded to Apple's engineering team. This means that the company is already aware of it. So anyone who owns one of these devices and has not yet updated should be patient. It can be assumed that Apple will provide a correction.
