The Mac devices support 4K streaming with high dynamic range
But even since Apple released Mac models with full HEVC support, 4K streaming was not supported because Safari was not updated accordingly. Users had to make do with 1080p resolution. This is now changing with macOS 11 Big Sur. This means that under the new Mac operating system users can watch content in 4K resolution. Dolby Vision and HDR10 are also supported. But there is a catch. 4K streaming with high dynamic range requires a Mac that was introduced in 2018 or later - according to Apple. Accordingly, older devices will only support 1080p under macOS 11 Big Sur. In addition to the innovation for Macs, Apple has also activated the VP9 codec for applications under iOS 14 and tvOS 14, which allows users to watch 4K HDR videos on YouTube for the first time.
