Apple unveiled the brand new M1 chip and three new Mac devices at the "One more thing" event. The launch date of macOS 11 Big Sur was also announced.

macOS is getting a major overhaul this year with version 11, which includes an all-new iOS-inspired design and much more. Now the company has announced the launch of macOS 11 Big Sur. The new Mac operating system will be available worldwide on November 12th.

macOS 11 Big Sur at a glance

There are many small animations that make macOS Big Sur so special. Translucency has been significantly improved and the application icons in the dock now resemble their iOS counterparts. In addition, the Control Center is coming to the desktop for the first time. It offers quick access to brightness and volume, for example. The Notification Center has also been adapted to the iOS adjusted and now has the same skills - such as grouping messages. The widget system introduced in iOS 14 will also be available in macOS 11 Big Sur. Both iMessage and the Maps app have been updated as a result.

macOS 11 Big Sur: These Mac devices are compatible

Mac Catalyst will receive new features, including native screen scaling and updated controls. This should help Mac Catalyst applications to fit better into the platform. But as with any major update, you should check beforehand whether your Mac is compatible. Below you will find all the Mac devices that can run macOS 11 Big Sur:

  • 2017 and newer iMac Pro
  • 2015 and newer MacBook
  • 2014 and newer Mac mini
  • 2014 and newer iMac
  • 2013 and newer Mac Pro
  • 2013 and newer MacBook Pro
  • 2013 and newer MacBook Air

Since Apple moved to version 11.0.1 during the beta, macOS Big Sur will be available as version 11.0.1 starting November 12. The update will be available for free download, as every year. AirPods Pro on special offer at Amazon – available now. (Image: Apple)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
