References to AMD processors have been discovered in the current macOS Catalina 10.15.4 beta. This is not the first discovery. Similar references were found in the macOS Catalina 10.15.2 beta in November.
Today's Mac devices are known to contain Intel processors. Accordingly, such information leads to speculation. Is Apple planning to introduce Mac devices with AMD processors? Or are they only being used for internal tests? When it comes to graphics, Apple relies on AMD in selected MacBook Pro, iMac, iMac Pro and Mac Pro models. However, there are no concrete rumors regarding future Macs with AMD processors.
Is the gaming Mac coming after all?
Today's discovery contains code names of AMD APUs such as Picasso, Raven, Renoir and Van Gogh. The so-called APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) is used as a marketing term by AMD for a CPU and a GPU. So is the gaming Mac coming after all? The Taiwanese news site Economic Daily News already announced a gaming Mac a few months ago. According to the court at the time, Apple is allegedly planning to present such a device at this year's WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference). But the rumor has so far remained unconfirmed by other sources. If Apple really has such a product in the works, the use of an AMD APU would be possible - even if many have viewed the idea negatively. Since there are no credible reports so far, today's discovery should be viewed with a relaxed attitude. After all, this could just be a harmless internal test.
