On his first day in office, John Ternus sent a message to all employees, had his biography expanded on Apple's website, and opened his own account on X. The expanded text reveals more about his priorities than the writing itself.
Since this morning John Ternus Apple as CEO, And the first day followed a pattern established by its predecessor: an internal message to the staff about how they Tim Cook had sent out his farewell message, along with an updated self-description on apple.com. The letter is in the possession of 9to5Mac, which has obtained it. have published the full text.
Key Facts at a Glance
- In the internal message, Ternus thanks his predecessor and cites his values and integrity as formative for the company.
- He announces next week's keynote as a major event and hints at products that haven't even been conceived yet.
- His biography on apple.com has been expanded by a paragraph that makes up almost half the text.
- The focus is on reliability, durability, materials and repairability – not software or artificial intelligence.
- He can be found on X as of today under @johnternus; his first post consists of one word.
The first message to the staff
The letter is brief in its content. Ternus thanks everyone for their congratulations, acknowledges the training provided by his predecessor, and praises his contributions over the years – Apple was fortunate to have had a leader who guided by his values. He expresses gratitude that Cook will remain on board as Executive Chairman.
He gets specific in two places. He writes that the presentation next week will be fantastic, referring to September 9th. And he hints at products already in development, as well as some that haven't even been imagined yet. This isn't a program, but rather the usual tone of an introductory letter.
A new paragraph with a signal effect
Apple's own account is more revealing. Biography page for Ternus It has been revised, and a completely new paragraph, which takes up almost half of the total length, has been added to a previously short text.
Three areas are mentioned: reliability and durability, for which Ternus has introduced new processes; advances in materials and hardware design that have reduced the CO2 footprint of the products, including a new alloy made from recycled aluminum and 3D-printed titanium in the Apple Watch Ultra; and improvements in repairability that have extended the lifespan of several products.
Anyone who reads Apple's self-descriptions knows how carefully they are worded. A paragraph of this length, added on the day of his inauguration, lists the topics with which the new CEO wants to be associated. What's striking is what's missing: Artificial intelligence is nowhere to be found, even though it's considered Apple's biggest challenge.
Why these priorities are particularly important in the EU
For the European market, the three areas mentioned are not matters of image, but legal obligations. Since June 20, 2025, the Ecodesign Regulation 2023/1670 and the Energy Labelling Regulation 2023/1669 have applied to smartphones and tablets. Among other things, they stipulate that manufacturers Provide updates for five years after the end of sales and keep spare parts available for seven years., that batteries can withstand at least 800 charging cycles with 80 percent remaining capacity and that devices demonstrate drop and scratch resistance.
The label, which has since been attached to every device sold in the EU, therefore lists precisely the metrics that the new sales pitch emphasizes: repairability index, robustness, and battery life. A CEO with a background in hardware development, who defines himself through durability, thus encounters a market that has been quantifying these attributes for over a year – and where they are clearly displayed side-by-side at the point of purchase.
A separate account at X
The third change of the day is the smallest: Ternus has been under [unclear] since today. @johnternus Apple is represented on X, its profile description consists of two letters, and its first post is a single word. While Apple itself maintains an account there, it practically only publishes advertisements; executives, on the other hand, speak personally. Cook used his account for years for product announcements and occasional statements.
A hardware expert sets hardware accents
The first day doesn't reveal a strategy, but it does offer a clue to the tone. Cook came from operations and shaped the company through supply chains, services, and market access. Ternus comes from device development, and his first self-description in his new role focuses on processes, materials, and how long a device lasts.
We therefore expect that durability and materials will receive more attention in upcoming keynotes than recently – the basis for this is the new paragraph, which specifically addresses these points compared to the previous version. Whether this also applies to the construction site, which is missing from his biography, will likely be the real question in the coming months. A first answer already exists. on stage in eight days.

Do you interpret the new focus as an honest commitment to durable devices – or as an avoidance of the issue where Apple is lagging behind?
