Apple has now officially made the third beta of iOS 15.1 and Co. available to registered developers. The new version includes the native ProRes function for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

When introducing the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple highlighted the ProRes codec processing and described the technology as a "pro" feature that is only available on the most expensive devices. ProRes offers high color fidelity and image quality. The codec is also widely used in existing post-production workflows and can be exported to programs such as Final Cut Pro. However, the feature has not been available until now. Now iPhone 13 Pro owners will probably be able to use the feature under iOS 15.1 receiveSo if you are running the third beta version of iOS 15.1 on one of the two devices, you can activate the feature in the settings, under Camera -> Formats -> Apple ProRes.

iPhone 13 Pro: ProRes video recordings require more storage space

Once the button is turned on, the updated camera controls for Apple ProRes will be displayed in the standard camera app. However, ProRes video recordings can take up a lot of storage space. Apple that one minute of 10-bit HDR ProRes is about 1.7 GB for HD and 6 GB for 4K. ProRes recording is supported at up to 30 frames per second at 4K and up to 60 frames per second at 1080p for devices with 256 GB storage and more. So if you're using an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max with 128 GB, you can only record 1080p at 30 frames per second. Don't have an iPhone 13 yet? Then take a look in our Amazon Storefront over.
