After dismantling the MacBook Air and the Mac mini, the guys from iFixit have now taken on the circuit boards of the new iPad Pro. A pretty sticky challenge.
The repair experts at iFixit have finally taken a look at the new iPad Pro from the inside. There is a clear downside when opening the device. Since Apple uses an extraordinary amount of glue, the device cannot be opened so easily. In addition, the narrow display frame makes it difficult to reach the inner workings.
Even more glue
Apple didn't skimp on the adhesive when gluing the battery and the motherboard. According to the report, it was a challenge for the professional tinkerers to get to the respective components. The amount of adhesive used for the battery alone left the repair specialists "speechless".
The remaining components show few new features. Even the Face ID hardware has remained the same despite the modified design. Apple has not soldered the USB-C port onto the logic board, which is why an independent replacement would be possible. The built-in speakers are particularly noteworthy - according to the repair service manager.
The rating for the repairability of the new iPad Pro was not so good. Here, iFixit awarded it 3 out of a possible 10 points. Ultimately, that is one point more than the previous model.
Apple Pencil 2 can do more
The guys from iFixit made a surprising discovery when cutting open the Apple Pencil 2. It may be able to do more than it currently claims. The professional tinkerers found a capacitive sensor that was wrapped around the inside. This would make much more complex gestures possible - according to iFixit. Whether Apple will expand the gesture control via a software update or whether further hardware modifications are necessary remains to be seen for now.
