The new iPad Pro has been shipping since Friday and Apple has since published further details about the device in a series of support documents. These cover topics such as the Liquid Retina XDR display, Thunderbolt and USB4 support, 5G networks for mobile models and the new Center Stage front camera function for video calls.

In addition to a brightness of up to 1,000 nits in full screen mode, the Liquid Retina XDR display supports a peak brightness of 1,600 nits for highlights in up to 40 percent of the screen area when the rest of the image is black or with a brightness of up to 600 nits, according to Apple:

To achieve Extreme Dynamic Range, the iPad Pro required a completely new display architecture. The all-new 2D mini LED backlight system with individually controlled local dimming zones was the best choice to achieve the extremely high brightness and contrast ratio across the entire screen area, as well as the off-axis color accuracy that creative professionals rely on for their workflows.

Loud Apple, the M1 chip is the engine behind the new display:

In addition, the M1 chip's advanced display engine runs custom algorithms that operate at the pixel level to control the display's mini-LED and LCD layers separately, treating them as two distinct displays. These proprietary algorithms coordinate the Mini LED and LCD layers at transitions to provide an optimal visual experience. Transitional features of local dimming zones, such as a slight blur or color change when scrolling against a black background, are normal behavior.

iPad Pro 2021 supports "Allow more data on 5G" function

As far as support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 is concerned, the explained Apple that some accessories can demand higher performance from the iPad Pro. For this reason, the company reminds customers to disconnect these accessories from the device when they are not in use:

The iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) also support a wide ecosystem of powerful Thunderbolt and USB4 accessories. Some accessories may require more power from your iPad, which can affect battery life. To extend battery life, remember to disconnect these accessories from your iPad Pro when not in use. For more information, see the accessory manufacturer's specifications.

In line with the iPhone 12 models, Apple has confirmedthat iPadOS updates over cellular are supported on the new iPad Pro when "Allow more data on 5G" is enabled:

Allow more data on 5G: Enables higher data usage for apps and system tasks. This includes higher quality FaceTime, high-resolution content on Apple TV, Apple Music songs and videos, and iPadOS updates over cellular. This setting also allows third-party apps to use more cellular data for improved experiences.

The new iPad Pro has a new ultra-wide front camera that enables Center Stage, a new feature that automatically frames the user perfectly during FaceTime video calls. Apple goes into detail in a support document to the settings of the function. (Image: Apple)
