The iOS 19 update could bring a new twist for users who want to switch from an iPhone to an Android smartphone. Currently, transferring an eSIM from iOS to Android is anything but easy. You usually have to contact your mobile provider to complete the switch. That could soon change.
Every new iOS version brings improvements. But iOS 19 could not only bring system optimizations, but also simplify the transition from iOS to Android. A particular focus is on eSIM transfer. The first hints of this have already appeared in the Android 16 beta, where a new feature has appeared in the Google SIM Manager.
Note on new feature in Android 16 Beta
Android Authority has discovered references to a new setting in Google SIM Manager in the Android 16 beta. The entry is called "Transfer to Android." This feature could make it possible to wirelessly transfer an eSIM from an iPhone to an Android smartphone. Currently, this is only possible with the help of your mobile provider and is often cumbersome.
What could change with iOS 19
According to the code in Google SIM Manager, iOS 19 is required to start the transfer. This suggests that Apple could integrate a corresponding feature directly into the system. So far, you can easily transfer your eSIM from one iPhone to another. However, if you want to switch to an Android phone, things get more complicated. Typically, you need support from your mobile provider, possibly new login credentials, or even a new eSIM. With the new feature, this would no longer be necessary.
Where the function might appear
Transferring to Android may appear as a new option in the iOS settings, specifically under: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Transfer to Android. If a wireless connection fails, there appears to be a backup via QR code. This would be useful if, for example, you don't have Wi-Fi available. A note states:
If you still can't connect wirelessly, make sure your other device is running iOS 19 or later.
What to expect from Apple and Google
Whether Apple will officially announce this feature at the next WWDC or quietly integrate it into iOS 19 remains to be seen. Google, for its part, appears to be working on making the transition from iOS to Android as easy as possible. It's also conceivable that Apple is working on a counter-solution to simplify the transition from Android to iPhone.
