Not only does Apple finally support Face ID in landscape mode on iPhones, but it will now also push standalone security improvements to iOS 16 devices between standard software updates.
This new update enables Apple to close known security vulnerabilities even faster. This is important for fixing bugs that are discovered shortly after an update. In theory, this means a security update can be distributed to iOS devices between "point" updates, which means less work for Apple's code base maintainers. In addition, Face ID in iOS 16 will work on supported iPhone models in landscape mode.
iOS 16 increases security
Currently, users have to hold the iPhone in portrait mode to unlock their phone with Face ID. However, Apple does not specify which models this applies to. Both iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models support the feature. Apple has announced further security updates, including Safety Check, a feature that allows victims to disconnect potentially dangerous connections with perpetrators.
