iOS 16 introduces a useful new feature that allows an eSIM to be transferred between two iPhone devices via Bluetooth while setting up cellular service.

In the Settings app on iOS 16, tapping Set Up eSIM will display an option to transfer an eSIM and its associated phone number from another iPhone via Bluetooth. To transfer an eSIM from another iPhone, loud Apple must ensure that the other iPhone is nearby, unlocked, Bluetooth enabled, and running iOS 16 or later. The feature appears to be available in several countries. However, it is only possible to perform Bluetooth transfers from eSIMs issued by operators that support this feature.

iOS 16 simplifies eSIM setup

Since iOS 16 was only announced a few days ago and is currently in beta, support from carriers could be very limited at the moment. Of course, the traditional option of setting up an eSIM by scanning a QR code provided by a carrier will still be offered. An eSIM is a digital SIM card that allows you to activate a mobile phone contract with a provider without having to use a physical nano-SIM card. A single eSIM is available on the iPhone XS and newer models, while all four iPhone 13 models support dual eSIMs. Whether your device is compatible with the new software, you can find out here. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
