Owners of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max should be aware that the iOS 16.1 beta prevents GPS from working properly on many users' devices. Anyone who relies on location should avoid the beta for now.

Bugs are common in beta software. But this problem affects a core function of the iPhone (via MacRumors). iPhone 14 Pro owners who have already installed the iOS 16.1 beta will need to downgrade to iOS 16.0.1 or wait for a newer iOS 16.1 beta to fix the problem to restore GPS functionality. A cause for the error is unclear.

iPhone 14 Pro users should avoid the current iOS 16.1 beta

Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 14 Pro models also have dual-frequency GPS support. This means that the iPhones can receive signals from GPS satellites that operate on both the traditional L1 frequency and the more powerful L5 frequency, which can better penetrate obstacles such as buildings and trees. The combination of the two signals should lead to improved location accuracy in map apps and more. The standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus do not have dual-frequency GPS support. (Image: Apple)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
