The leaked iOS 14 preview not only contains hints about Apple Watch features but also the already revealed AirTags.
The US blog MacRumors has discovered new references to the Tile-like tracker AirTag within iOS 14. Although the functionality of the small trackers has already been revealed, the question of charging options remained unanswered. At the end of February, Macotakara learned that the small AirTags are charged in a similar way to the Apple Watch. But iOS 14 suggests otherwise. There are supposed to be clues in the code that suggest that the AirTags should have removable CR2032 button cells. The same battery is also used in the competing product Tile Pro. CR2032 batteries are not designed to be recharged and must be replaced over time - the battery of the Tile Pro, for example, lasts around a year. But MacRumors warns - the information published today is based on a prototype.
AirTags already discovered in iOS 13
According to this, Apple could use magnetic charging in the final product like the Apple Watch. The AirTags were originally discovered in an early iOS 13 beta. Over the course of the last year, MacRumors was able to reveal the new accessories in detail and thus make the functionality of the small trackers public. While the market launch of the AirTags was expected in autumn 2019, reports later emerged that Apple wanted to present the product in the first half of 2020.
