Apple will soon release iOS 14.3, iPadOS 14.3 watchOS 7.2 and more to all users. Now it has been confirmed that iOS 14.3 and watchOS 7.2 include a new ECG algorithm.
Apple has developed a new algorithm that the Apple Watch uses to measure electrocardiogram (ECG) waves. This is stated in the developer documentation for the current iOS 14.3 and watchOS 7.2 betas. In the official documentation a new "Version 2 Algorithm" declaration has been added, but no further information is included. The ECG feature includes irregular heart rhythm detection, which intermittently measures the user's heart rate in the background and sends a notification when it detects an abnormality that it classifies as atrial fibrillation, which can be a serious heart rhythm disorder.
iOS 14.3 and Co. will be released soon
It's likely that the new algorithm will allow the ECG app to check for atrial fibrillation (AFib) at higher heart rates - for example during exercise. iOS 14.3 will introduce support for Apple Fitness+ in select countries. In addition, a new cardio fitness feature will also appear that lets users know if their VO2Max levels are low. VO2Max is a useful measurement of general fitness and heart health. iOS 14.3 and co. are expected to be released on Monday, December 14.
