Despite various attempts to fix the problem, some iCloud users continue to be plagued by spam calendar invitations that cause their calendars to be filled with random events.

This issue was reported in 2016 and Apple stated that it is "actively working to resolve this issue" by "identifying and blocking suspicious senders." Victims are targeted in a variety of ways. The most common method is to receive a regular iCloud calendar invitation through the Calendar app. Interacting with the invitation, including declining, accepting, or selecting "Maybe," lets the spammer know that the email address is valid, so it can still be targeted. Other users are targeted via web pop-ups to potentially malicious or adult websites. Apple has not publicly commented on what specific actions it has taken to resolve the issue.

Apple releases new video

However, through a video published by Apple Support on YouTube, the company shows users a solution. The video advises users to logically unsubscribe from these spam calendars.

The video However, it does not provide insight into what proactive steps users can take to avoid receiving the invitations in the first place. One measure that some users have found helpful is redirecting calendar invitations to their email rather than an in-app calendar invite. Redirecting invitations to their email address allows users to more easily manage and delete calendar invitations.

Remove calendar spam on iPhone & iPad – here's how

If you are affected, you can proceed as follows:

  • Make sure you are using the latest version of iOS.
  • Open the Calendar app.
  • Tap the unwanted calendar event.
  • Tap “Unsubscribe from this calendar” at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap “Cancel Subscription” to confirm.
