ChatGPT will no longer respond with just text. With GPT-6, the assistant will integrate diagrams, maps, calculators, or even mini-games directly into its answers, depending on the question – and will even start typing while it's still thinking. This new generation will also be available to free users for the first time.
OpenAI, the AI research and practical application company, is bringing GPT-6 to the standard chat view of ChatGPT. OpenAI had reserved the first models of this generation for paying customers in September. Now, according to OpenAI's announcement, a model tailored for everyday conversations is being rolled out to the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.
The key new feature is a function called Intelligent UI. This is complemented by faster response times and revised security mechanisms, which, according to OpenAI, build upon advancements from GPT-6 Astra.
Key Facts at a Glance
- GPT-6 is coming to the chat view of ChatGPT, initially for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and from October 8th also for Free and Go.
- Paying customers receive GPT-6 Sol, while free and Go customers receive GPT-6 Luna.
- Intelligent UI allows ChatGPT to assemble responses from text, graphics, buttons, forms, and interactive elements.
- ChatGPT can begin answering while it is still thinking – on average 44 percent earlier than before for questions involving web searches.
- The models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged.
Who gets which model
The rollout is starting worldwide. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans will receive GPT-6 immediately, with the rollout to Free and Go plans beginning October 8th. Availability for Enterprise accounts depends on administrator settings.
| Tarif | Model in chat view | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | October 7 |
| Free, Go | GPT-6 Luna | from October 8th |
According to OpenAI, both models are designed for everyday conversations. GPT-6 Luna recently appeared as a comparison model when Anthropic presented its mini-model Claude Haiku 5.5. The change affects only the chat view – OpenAI is not replacing the models in ChatGPT Work and Codex with this step.
What Intelligent UI does
Instead of forcing every question into the same conversational format, GPT-6 assembles the answer from text, images, and interactive elements, deciding for itself how these fit together. A comparison can appear side-by-side, an explanation as a diagram where individual areas can be tapped. Where a purely text-based answer is most useful, it remains text-based.
OpenAI demonstrates this with examples such as a timeline for a Sunday roast alongside the recipe, a travel route on a map, or an explanation of the Monty Hall problem, allowing users to explore the probabilities themselves. ChatGPT can also build small tools directly during the conversation upon request: a savings calculator, a calculator for splitting a restaurant bill, or a simple game.
Technically, the function relies on a library of pre-built components and a compiler that constructs the user interface as the code is written. The response thus appears gradually, rather than only after completion. OpenAI itself acknowledges that the model's understanding of good design still needs improvement.
Answers before the thinking ends
Previously, users of models with a thinking phase had to wait until this phase was complete. GPT-6 integrates thinking and answering: ChatGPT first provides what it already knows and then supplements the answer in several steps, without making it appear fragmented at the end.
For questions involving web searches, OpenAI quantifies the benefit: GPT-6 Instant starts providing answers on average 44 percent earlier than GPT-5.6 Instant. At the same time, the model is said to be better at deciding when a search is even necessary and more frequently finding sources that actually support the answer. The remaining comparisons are based on internal OpenAI tests without published data.
A chatbot that builds its own interface
I consider Intelligent UI a bigger step than the new model itself. A calculator, a map, or a schedule within a chat—everything people use ChatGPT for—moving away from a question-and-answer machine and towards a tool that generates small programs on the fly. OpenAI clearly states its goal: software should adapt to people, not the other way around.
Whether the building blocks are actually better in everyday use than a paragraph of text depends precisely on the design aspect, where OpenAI itself still sees room for improvement. If you use ChatGPT for free, you'll receive the feature with the rollout starting October 8th without changing your plan – however, with the smaller Luna model instead of Sol.
Would you prefer to receive a calculator or an interactive diagram from ChatGPT in the future – or do you prefer the simple text response because it's quicker to scan? Tell us in the comments which response format you prefer.
