It was already to be expected - Google introduced new hardware this evening. As part of its developer conference Google I/O, the company introduced two new smartphones - the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL.

With the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL, the company wants to establish itself in the mid-range smartphone business. One thing is already clear: the cameras on both devices are impressive! The Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL are the cheaper versions of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, which were introduced in October 2018. The new models have more than just an astonishing resemblance to their premium class counterparts. The devices have a 5.6″ or 6″ OLED screen and offer Full HD+. The 6″ model has a pixel density of 402 ppi. Beautiful contrasts and colors are guaranteed. Both Google Pixels do not have a glass back and are protected by polycarbonate - a big advantage over a glass back.

USB-C and Bluetooth 5.0

The heart of the Google Pixel 3a is the well-known Snapdragon 670 Qualcomm chip. The devices are delivered with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The batteries are also impressive - the Google Pixel 3a has a 3000 mAh battery, while its big brother offers a whopping 3700 mAh. The power cable supplied can be used for quick charging - 15 minutes on the power supply gives the user around seven hours of power - but the devices do not support wireless charging. The housing dimensions of the Pixel 3a and 3a XL are 152.3 x 70.1 x 8.2 mm and 160.1 x 76.1 x 8.2 mm respectively. Both devices are equipped with a USB-C port and a 3.5 mm jack input - Bluetooth 5.0 is also available. The audio jack is located on the top of the devices.

The camera is convincing

On the back is the same 12.2 megapixel camera as on the Pixel 3 and 3XL. The camera impresses with its f/1.8 aperture, two-phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilization, among other things. An 8 megapixel lens is used on the front. Thanks to the excellent photography software, photos with the new models are almost as good as those with the premium models. It doesn't matter whether these are pictures in poor lighting conditions, night shots or portrait photos - the Google Pixel 3a is impressive. Although the new Pixel does not have a telephoto or super wide-angle lens, with the help of the software it can take better photos than some premium competitors.

Prices and availability

The Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL will go on sale this week in the US and 12 other markets. The new mid-range smartphones can be purchased for 400 and 480 euros respectively. They are available in white and black.
