Apple released the third beta version of iOS 15.5 to developers on Tuesday evening. Although the update doesn't bring any major changes, Apple has made an interesting change to the native Photos app. The system now blocks "sensitive locations" for memories in the Photos app.
Memories is a feature of the Photos app on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS that recognizes people, places, and events in your photo collection and automatically creates "curated collections" with a slideshow. Since this feature is based entirely on machine learning, Apple has now made some changes to prevent unwanted memories from being created.
iOS 15.5: Said places are connected to the Holocaust
As the US blog 9to5Mac reported, in the code of iOS 15.5 Beta 3, there is a list of "sensitive locations" so that photos taken there are never added to a review. Interestingly, all of the locations that are banned in this version are related to the Holocaust. Below is a list of the locations:
- Yad Vashem Memorial
- Dachau concentration camp
- Majdanek concentration camp
- US Holocaust Museum
- Holocaust Memorial Berlin
- Schindler factory
- Belzec concentration camp
- Anne Frank House
- Sobibor concentration camp
- Treblinka concentration camp
- Chelmno-Kulmhof concentration camp
- Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp
Each location is assigned a latitude, longitude and radius, so the Photos app ignores images taken at those locations when creating new Memories. Of course, Apple can add new locations to this list with future iOS updates. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
