Apple announced a few weeks ago that applications related to the novel coronavirus would be treated separately. Now there is a new explanation.
Apple has on its own developer website issued a new statement on how to deal with COVID-19 apps. It states:
The App Store should always be a safe and trusted place for users to download applications. Now more than ever, as the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic, this commitment is especially important. Communities around the world rely on apps to be credible sources of news – helping users understand the latest health innovations, find out where to get help if they need it, or help their neighbors.
To meet these expectations, we critically evaluate apps to ensure that the data sources are reputable and that the developers presenting these apps come from recognized entities such as government organizations, health-focused NGOs, companies with a strong track record in health-related issues, and medical or educational institutions. Only developers from one of these recognized entities should submit a COVID-19-related application. Entertainment or gaming apps with COVID-19 as a theme are not eligible.
Accelerated review and suspension of membership fees
Accordingly, apps related to the novel coronavirus will only be approved in the App Store from reputable sources. The review process will also be accelerated. However, COVID-19-related applications that are intended for entertainment purposes will not be approved. In the course of this, Apple notes that the annual membership fee will be suspended if the COVID-19 application is offered free of charge. It concludes:
We understand the need to get these apps into customers' hands as quickly as possible. We encourage developers who meet these criteria to select "Time-Critical Events" on the Quick Request form to ensure prioritized review, as App Store review can take longer.
If you are developing an application on behalf of a customer, encourage the customer to add you to the development team of their Apple Developer account. If your customer does not already have an Apple Developer account, they can enroll in the Apple Developer program. Nonprofit organizations, accredited educational institutions, and government agencies that plan to distribute only free applications on the App Store can apply to have their annual membership fees waived if they are located in an eligible country.
