Apple today confirmed this year's World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC 2020) in a press release - the event will be held in a new format.
Unlike in recent years, Apple has officially confirmed WWDC 2020 today but without sending out invitations - the reason is the current coronavirus crisis. Accordingly, Apple will hold the World Wide Developer Conference 2020 as usual in June - but online. This is what the press release:
Cupertino, California — Apple today announced it will host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Now in its 31st year, WWDC 2020 will adopt an all-new online format with rich content for consumers, press and developers alike. The online event will provide millions of creative and innovative developers with the opportunity to gain early access to the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS and collaborate with Apple engineers to build apps that enrich the lives of Apple customers around the world.
“Current health situation makes it necessary”
As expected, Apple will hold this year's developer conference entirely online. Phil Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, explains:
We're delivering WWDC 2020 this June in an innovative way for millions of developers around the world, bringing the entire developer community together with a new experience. The current health situation has required us to create a new WWDC 2020 format that offers a full program with an online keynote and sessions that will be a great learning experience for our entire developer community around the world. We'll share full details in the coming weeks.
However, no specific date was set in the announcement. According to Apple, the online event will take place in June - further information is to follow. The company also pledged a donation to local organizations in San Jose. The announcement states:
Apple also announced that it will donate $1 million to local organizations in San Jose to help offset the associated loss of revenue resulting from WWDC 2020's new online format.
