The RKI recently published an app that works in combination with smartwatches or fitness bracelets. But another application is coming - Project PEPP-PT.
The application published by the Robert Koch Institute called “Corona data donation" requires a smartwatch or fitness tracker to collect health data. The app is free and operates completely anonymously. Only the postcode is required when registering. But it won't stop there. Another app is being developed at the European level: Project PEPP-PT. This second application is intended to track infection chains using Bluetooth. This means that each user receives an anonymized ID and is essentially accompanied by the app. As soon as several people meet, the installed applications communicate with each other via Bluetooth. If one of these people is found to be corona-positive, all other users who were nearby are subsequently warned.
The publisher remains unclear
The warning does not reveal the identity or exact location. This means that the user is basically only warned that they may have been infected and should get tested. For this to work, as many people as possible need to install the app on their smartphones and, if someone tests positive, store the information in the app. According to the makers, the aim is to carry out proper and, above all, accurate measurements across borders while guaranteeing privacy. Now a member of the Digital Council has told the German press agency that the app will be launched after Easter. According to the report, the application could appear between April 15 and 19. Participation is voluntary and all data is strictly anonymized. So while the goals of the app are clear, the publisher remains unknown - a matter that is to be regulated at the political level.
