Apple's interest in augmented reality has long been no secret. But Facebook is also very interested in augmented reality.

According to a new report from The Information, Apple is said to have considered buying British company Plessey Semiconductors, a manufacturer of micro-LED displays for augmented reality devices. report:

Facebook has struck a deal to buy all of British company Plessey's augmented reality displays as the social network tries to build AR glasses that can overlay virtual objects on the real world. The deal could give Facebook an edge over Apple, which recently considered buying Plessey, one of the few AR display makers, two people familiar with the matter said.

Facebook confirms the deal and provides insight

Apple's work in the area of augmented reality is already well advanced, as can be seen in frameworks such as ARKit and RealityKit and more. But Facebook could now gain an advantage from the deal. Whether this will affect Apple's future progress remains to be seen. The deal has already been confirmed by Facebook. In the course of this, the company explained that the development of real AR glasses will take "years" - the aim is to bring friends and family even closer together. Whether the implementation will be successful remains to be seen, of course. You can find more on the subject of Apple and augmented reality in our archive. (Photo by Andrey Suslov / Bigstockphoto)
