Last night, Apple expanded its AppleCare+ service product to include coverage for glass damage on the back of the iPhone, significantly reducing the price of some repairs for the iPhone 12 and the just-announced iPhone 13.

As can be seen on the iPhone repair and service page, the new AppleCare+ option is technically an extension of an existing fee tier for screen-only damage. Previously, repairing damage to the iPhone's rear glass cost €99 if the device was covered by an AppleCare+ plan. However, screen-only repairs cost €29 if there was no other major damage. With yesterday's change, repairs that only affect the rear glass are included in the "screen only" category and can be performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for €29. However, this only applies to iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models.

AppleCare+ with additional coverage in Germany

In addition, AppleCare+ has been expanded to include optional coverage against theft and loss. To be precise, customers can now book “AppleCare+” or optionally “AppleCare+ including coverage against theft and loss”. The price is as follows:

iPhone 13 mini & iPhone 13:

  • Classic “AppleCare+” coverage for 169 euros (two-year term) or optionally for 8.49 euros with monthly payment until cancellation.
  • “AppleCare+ including protection against theft and loss” insurance for 229 euros (term two years) or optionally for 11.49 euros with monthly payment until cancellation.

iPhone 13 Pro & iPhone 13 Pro Max:

  • Classic “AppleCare+” coverage for 229 euros (two-year term) or optionally for 11.49 euros with monthly payment until cancellation.
  • “AppleCare+ including protection against theft and loss” insurance for 289 euros (term two years) or optionally for 14.49 euros with monthly payment until cancellation.

The advantage of the new version of AppleCare+ is that the device is protected even if it is lost or stolen. If either of these two cases occurs, users with the corresponding coverage can receive a replacement device for a one-off payment of 129 euros. Given the high prices, the new coverage will certainly be attractive to some people.

Important to note

Apple notices Regarding the new version of AppleCare+ coverage:

To be covered against theft and loss, Find My iPhone must be activated on your device at the time of loss or theft and throughout the insurance claim.

AppleCare+ and AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss Protection are available for:

  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12

  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhone 13: This is how much the repair costs outside the warranty period

Since Apple already has its own iPhone 13 price list updated has, you will find the details below. According to the fee table, the repair costs are 640.90 euros for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, 590.90 euros for the iPhone 13 Pro, 476.90 euros for the iPhone 13 and 430.90 euros for the iPhone 13 mini. So if you buy the new iPhone, you should think about whether to book AppleCare+ or alternatively another insurance policy - given the prices, it would at least be advisable.
