Apple Card struggles with cosmetic issues

Cupertino's new credit card, the Apple Card, has been available to all US users since August 20. Some people were able to enjoy the new payment method a few weeks earlier and are now realizing that Apple's latest product is probably not as perfect as expected.

Apple began introducing the Apple Card at the beginning of the month in the form of an invitation system. The Apple Card is a fee-free credit card - the payment method is managed via the Wallet application. In addition to the digital version, customers also receive a physical version of the Apple Card - however, this is not made of plastic but of titanium. The manufacturing process is said to be particularly complex, which is why the card is also advertised as being of very high quality.

However, many customers are currently questioning its durability. Some users have been using the Apple Card for around a month and are now realizing that the card has already lost its elegant appearance. Twitter user and former Apple employee Zed published a picture of his Apple Card during a discussion that shows significant wear on the surface of the card - and this can no longer be removed.

Apple's care tips

Apple itself has explained how to care for the card in a support document, mentioning its susceptibility to scratches, nicks, and other discoloration. However, many are surprised that the wear and tear can begin after just one month. Apple recommends wiping the card with a slightly damp, lint-free microfiber cloth. Users with particularly dirty cards can go the extra step and use isopropyl alcohol. Apple also points out that, due to its white surface, the card could be discolored by leather. Needless to say, other credit card issuers do not publish such tips—including those that offer titanium versions. Amex, for example, offers the so-called Centurion Card—also known as the "Black Card"—a credit card made of titanium and black with light-colored trim.

So far only a cosmetic problem

The card itself is less susceptible to scratches or similar - the reason for this lies in the manufacturing process - which is why it cannot be compared to Apple's version - but unfortunately some users are currently making this mistake.

Nevertheless, Apple could have saved itself the trouble of making the leather sensitive. Affected users have so far only reported the cosmetic problem - no restrictions on using the Apple Card at the terminal have been identified. Whether this will one day lead to functional problems remains to be seen - as long as the magnetic strip remains undamaged, the card should be ready for use at any time.
