In an attempt to exploit the timing of Apple's "Spring Loaded" event on Tuesday, a ransomware group posted on the dark web that it had obtained stolen schematics for upcoming products from Apple supplier Quanta Computer.
The so-called “REvil” group cited Apple’s keynote presentation in their ransom note and demanded that Apple “buy back the available data by May 1,” according to The Record reportedThe letter claims that the group is "negotiating with several major brands to sell large amounts of confidential drawings and personal data." The threat specifically mentions the Apple Watch, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and the Lenovo ThinkPad Z60m. The apparent extortion attempt included 21 images showing MacBook schematics. "REvil" threatened to release new data every day until the ransom is paid.
Ransomware attacks on Apple partners are increasing
Citing a source familiar with the alleged extortion, The Record reports that the group behind the attempt is demanding $50 million from Quanta. It remains unknown how much is being demanded from Apple. Late last year, another Apple partner - CSAT Solutions - was hit by a ransomware attack that caused delays in repairs of computers sent to Apple. The company was reportedly able to redirect repairs to other facilities while those at CSAT were evaluated or replaced. Apple assembly partner Compal was also hit by a ransomware attack in late 2020 that caused problems with the company's network and potentially led to short-term delays in production for some of its customers.
