Although it was announced alongside a new Apple TV 4K on Tuesday, the second-generation Siri Remote is compatible with older models of Apple's set-top box and can be purchased separately from Apple.

The new Siri Remote is available from Apple's online store and brings precise control to the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, says the ad, which reveals that it will work with older models as well. The redesigned remote addresses criticisms of the previous generation by adding an all-new touch-enabled clickpad. It also has a circular outer ring for gestures, reminiscent of the iPod classic's clickwheel. Additionally, Apple has moved the Siri button to the right side of the remote to bring it in line with the iPhone side button used to invoke Siri on the phone. Like the previous Siri Remote, the second-generation model is charged via Lightning. Accordingly, the €65 accessory ships with a Lightning-to-USB cable. It also includes an IR emitter that allows it to function as a universal remote for other devices in the user's entertainment space, such as an HD TV or surround sound receiver.

Siri Remote connects to Apple TV via Bluetooth

However, it connects to the Apple TV via Bluetooth, so no line of sight is required. The brand new Siri Remote was unveiled alongside the new Apple TV 4K at Tuesday's "Spring Loaded" event. The latest Apple TV 4K ships with the redesigned remote, but users of previous generation devices can purchase the Siri Remote separately without needing a new set-top box. In addition to the redesigned remote, the sixth generation Apple TV features the A12 Bionic CPU and a new automatic color matching feature that is performed using an iPhone. The new Apple TV - along with the new second generation Siri Remote - will be available for pre-order starting April 30. Both products are expected to ship in the second half of May. (Image: Apple)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
