Apple significantly expands AirPods production in India

Apple is further expanding its production in India. The company plans to produce significantly more AirPods there in the future. The focus is on a factory owned by contract manufacturer Foxconn in Hyderabad, which is set to significantly expand its capacity and workforce. This continues Apple's strategy of diversifying its manufacturing footprint and reducing its dependence on China.

Foxconn began producing AirPods in April in the Indian state of Telangana, specifically in Hyderabad. The factory is located in the Kongara Kalan industrial park and initially produced more than 100,000 units per month. This number is now set to double. According to the Economic Times, Apple plans to increase monthly production capacity to around 200,000 units. To achieve this, Foxconn will overhaul five existing assembly lines and install additional machinery. Some of the new equipment will come from factories in Vietnam that were converted and relocated to India.

Production in Hyderabad picks up speed

The AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 models are currently being assembled in Hyderabad. To achieve the production target, the number of employees will also increase significantly. Starting at around 2,000, the workforce is expected to grow to approximately 5,000 within the next six to eight months. This will quickly create a major production site for Apple accessories in India.

The expansion follows a period in which production was temporarily restricted. In July, shortages arose due to a shortage of dysprosium, a rare earth metal required for certain components. This was due to China's decision to introduce stricter export controls on rare earth metals. This measure had a global impact on electronics production and once again demonstrated how heavily the industry depends on individual raw material suppliers.

Strategic relocation of Apple production

The decision to expand AirPods production in India fits into Apple's overarching strategy to diversify its supply chains. The company is increasingly expanding manufacturing outside of China to reduce geopolitical risks and become less dependent on export restrictions. In addition to AirPods, iPhones and other accessories are already produced in India. The country is thus becoming an important manufacturing hub for Apple.

Foxconn plays a central role in this. The Taiwanese company is one of Apple's most important manufacturing partners and has invested significantly in India in recent years. The relocation of machinery and know-how from Vietnam to Hyderabad demonstrates that Foxconn and Apple are specifically aligning their collaboration with increased efficiency and flexibility.

India is gaining importance

For India, the expansion of AirPods production represents another step on its path to becoming a major location in global electronics production. The growing number of employees and increasing local value creation could strengthen the country's role in the international technology market in the long term. The project is also economically relevant, as Apple and Foxconn will create additional jobs and promote technology transfer.
