Apple currently seems to be having problems with the home office. Complaints that replacement AirPods are being sent with the wrong firmware are increasing - and what's particularly annoying is that they are unusable.
Anyone who orders a replacement AirPod at the moment could potentially receive an unusable plug. The problem is the software version. Current replacement products appear to have version 2D3, a firmware that is not yet officially available. This means that the replacement plugs cannot be paired with existing AirPods. The phenomenon was first documented on March 25th. Some people seem to have had the problem multiple times, which of course makes it even more annoying.
Individual users were compensated with upgrades
Apple support staff have confirmed to individual users that the problem is somewhat widespread. The solution would be the release of firmware version 2D3. However, due to Apple employees working from home, it is not known when the new software version can be completed and released. Some have already been compensated with a set of new AirPods Pro when they exchanged their AirPods Gen. 2.
