Apple released the first public beta of iOS 13, iPadOS 13 and macOS 10.15 Catalina this evening. The updates are now available for registered beta testers.

Apple originally announced the first public beta for iOS 13, iPadOS 13 and macOS 10.15 Catalina for July. Now, completely unexpectedly, the company has brought the updates forward. Although all three versions are now running quite stably, there are still various bugs and general performance problems. Many apps are also still incompatible. Volunteer testers should of course also be prepared for problems with battery life.

iOS 13 contains numerous updates and improvements. In addition to the long-awaited Dark Mode, there are general performance improvements and many new features. A particularly important function is the “Optimized battery charging” – this should have a positive effect on the battery status of the iOS device. iPadOS 13 includes a redesigned Files app, home screen updates, key improvements to Safari, folder sharing for iCloud Drive, and more—read more here.

Bye Bye iTunes

With macOS 10.15 Catalina, iTunes buried for good. What was previously found in iTunes will be independent with the new operating system from autumn. Music, podcasts, films and series will each have their own application. The new podcast app offers a special search function - it finds texts that were spoken in podcasts. iOS backups are stored in the Finder under Catalina. The new TV app under macOS looks like the TV app under iOS. Playback of compatible content includes 4K HDR and Atmos content. Users will also be able to use their iPad as a second screen in the future. The feature is called “Sidecar”. Problems with iOS 13, iPadOS 13 and macOS Catalina can be reported using the integrated feedback application on the respective test device. Apple's beta website is still offline for many users. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
