A patent application from Apple granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office shows how iPhones could take better photos underwater in the future.
With the iPhone XS generation, Apple has introduced waterproof devices with an IP 68 classification for the first time. Numerous tests on YouTube show how resistant the current iPhone generation really is. It is therefore understandable that many iPhone users want to take photos underwater. Unfortunately, these do not turn out as well as hoped. A new Apple patent shows how Cupertino wants to make this situation significantly better in the future.
Automatic environment detection
According to the description, the iPhone will automatically recognize its surroundings in the future - even when it is underwater. A picture taken underwater will be automatically corrected by the system and will produce results just as high-quality as on the surface. In addition to optimized software, the hardware will also need to be improved. As soon as the shutter button is pressed, the system will be informed of its surroundings using sensors. The sensors in question will determine values for pressure and depth and thus influence the automatic post-processing of the images. The idea behind it sounds exciting, but it remains to be seen whether Apple will actually implement such technology in the iPhone.
