Apple Music will get support for two new audio formats in June, including Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio. But the HomePod will not support all of the features.
MacRumors wants experience that the large HomePod and the mini model do not support lossless audio. Spatial audio is a different story. According to Apple's website, the HomePod supports spatial audio. However, it remains unclear whether this also applies to the HomePod mini. Spatial audio, based on Dolby Atmos, is an immersive three-dimensional audio format that allows musicians to mix music so that it sounds as if the instruments are spread out all around you in the room. Lossless audio, on the other hand, refers to audio recordings that have been compressed without reducing the overall quality of the audio, which can lead to an improved listening experience, although the difference is not always obvious.
Apple Music Spatial & Lossless Audio launches in June
Apple Music will have two levels of lossless audio, including standard "lossless" audio up to 48 kHz and "Hi-Res Lossless" audio, which ranges from 48 kHz to 192 kHz. Apple said that "Hi-Res Lossless" will require external devices such as a USB digital-to-analog converter. Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio will loud Apple will make it available to all Apple Music subscribers in June at no additional cost on devices running iOS 14.6, iPadOS 14.6, macOS 11.4, and tvOS 14.6 or later. There will also likely be an accompanying HomePod software update that enables Spatial Audio support in time for the feature's launch. Spatial Audio will be available for thousands of tracks at launch, with more to be added regularly, according to Apple.
