Apple is constantly working on improvements to stay competitive. As part of this, the company seems to want to expand the functionality of the iCloud Keychain.
The US blog 9to5mac released an early test version of iOS 14 and revealed dozens of new features. Next up are innovations in the iCloud keychain area. According to the latest discovery, Apple seems to want to improve the iOS, iPadOS and macOS internal password manager in iOS 14. In this case, references to a new password warning and support for generating codes for two-factor authentication were found. This means that the iCloud keychain will display current information after warnings if users want to use an already assigned password again on another website. This is a useful extension of the existing function for detecting duplicate passwords. Currently, individual accesses within the iCloud keychain are marked with a small exclamation mark if identical passwords are assigned multiple times.
The iCloud Keychain becomes more competitive
This is useful because cracked passwords are often compared on various platforms to find out whether users use other accounts with the same password. Accordingly, the feature increases general protection. Furthermore, Apple seems to be working on a function that supports the generation of codes for two-factor authentication. If the feature actually makes its way into iOS 14, users could rely entirely on the iCloud keychain when using accounts that are protected with two-factor authentication. This would eliminate the annoying need to enter codes, as the process runs directly in the background. Competitors such as 1Password already have such features, but they are subject to a fee. If Apple does actually offer these functions in the end, the iCloud keychain should be much more attractive for many users, especially since the service is completely free and particularly secure.
