Apple has introduced the iPad 11, a new entry-level tablet equipped with the A16 chip. This means it offers more power than its predecessor, but there are also some changes that are not obvious at first glance. The iPad 11 replaces the previous entry-level model, the iPad 10. With the A16 chip, Apple is using more powerful hardware, but not all functions have been improved. However, Apple has dispensed with some technologies in this model, including support for Apple Intelligence and a physical SIM card slot. No support for Apple Intelligence
Apple recently announced "Apple Intelligence" as a new AI technology for its devices, but the iPad 11 will not support this feature. This means that AI-powered features that will appear in future software updates for other iPads and iPhones will not be available here. Those who rely on this technology should opt for a more powerful iPad model.
Larger storage option with up to 512 GB
A significant improvement is the ability to purchase the iPad 11 with up to 512GB of storage. This is the first time that an entry-level iPad has been available with this much storage. This is a clear advantage, especially for users who want to store a lot of apps, videos or documents.
Improved camera with Smart HDR 4
Apple has optimized the image processing in the iPad 11. While the iPad 10 still worked with Smart HDR 3, Smart HDR 4 is now used. This technology ensures improved contrast, stronger colors and more detailed photos.
Bluetooth 5.3 for more stable connections
The iPad 11 now uses Bluetooth 5.3 instead of Bluetooth 5.2 like its predecessor. This update provides a more stable connection and more efficient data transfer. This can have a positive effect, especially when using wireless headphones or external accessories.
No more physical SIM card slot
One important change concerns the cellular models of the iPad 11. Apple specifies a display size of 11 inches for the iPad 11, while the iPad 10 was officially specified as 10.9 inches. In reality, however, both models have a 10.86-inch display. Apple simply rounded up the new model. This does not change anything for the user, the screen size remains the same.
Uncertainties regarding RAM and modem
Apple has not yet made any official statements about the iPad 11's RAM. The iPad 10 had 4 GB of RAM, while the iPhones with A16 Bionic have 6 GB of RAM. However, since the iPad 11 only uses the normal A16 chip with lower GPU and CPU performance, it remains unclear whether it will also be equipped with 6 GB of RAM. There is also no precise information about the built-in modem. Apple does not mention its own C1 modem, which is why the cellular models of the iPad 11 will probably still be equipped with a Qualcomm modem. These details will only be clarified through teardowns.
Price and availability
The iPad 11 is available for pre-order now and will be officially released on Friday, March 12th. In Germany, the price for the Wi-Fi model starts at €399.
iPad 11: Improvements with compromises
The new iPad 11 with A16 chip brings some useful improvements. The increased performance, the larger storage option and the improved image processing are particularly positive aspects. Bluetooth 5.3 also ensures more modern connection standards. However, there are also limitations.
