This discovery is causing a stir as it refutes the previous assumption that the EU would be completely excluded from AI features.
Release notes provide information
The developer beta 1 of macOS Sequoia 15.1 and iOS 18.1 provides crucial information. The release notes clearly state that Apple Intelligence is available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not in the EU or China. For macOS Sequoia 15.1, on the other hand, it mentions that Apple Intelligence is available on Macs with M1 and above, but is only blocked in China. This suggests that Mac users in the EU may be able to enjoy the AI features after all.
Different regulations for Macs and mobile devices
The reason for this discrepancy lies in the different regulations. The DMA mainly affects mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads, while Macs are largely unaffected. This could give Apple the leeway to enable Apple Intelligence at least on Macs in the EU while negotiations with EU regulators continue.
Future developments
While the current notes are hopeful, the release notes may change in future updates. Nevertheless, it seems likely that with the launch of macOS Sequoia 15.1, Apple Intelligence will also become available to EU users - provided their Mac is set to US English.
